John Broadwood art case grand piano

John Broadwood art case grand piano, which we have spent between 200 and 250 hours rebuilding is now complete the piano was made around 1910. The piano is a 5'8" grand piano with dual gate legs made from, Rosewood and Rosewood veneer the casework is a inlaid with satinwood banding and various marquetry inserts on the legs. There has been extensive restoration work on all the piano working parts example new hammers, dampers, strings, key bushings, rollers, even down to having the metal frame bolts re-coated in nickel silver. It is my most treasured possession and takes pride of place at one end of the lounge in our lovely old Barn. The tones of this piano are beautiful right from one end of the lovely, ivory keyboard to the other. It is such a pleasure to play this beautiful instrument which transforms everything I play into something exceptional.

From the first moment we stepped into your shop, I just knew we were dealing with the right kind of people. From the moment I set eyes on the Bluthner, even in its unfinished state, I just knew we were meant to be together. Fortunately for me, before that moment, I had found the man I was meant to be together with and he was willing to stump up the money for my beautiful baby grand. What a marriage made in heaven!

It's lovely to know the Bluthner was in such caring, capable, loving hands before it reached me and it continues to enjoy just as much appreciation now that it's in our home.

My wife and I had been looking for a piano for some two years, and looked at instruments from the sublime to the ridiculous, yet we were struggling to find something that satisfied my wife’s grade 7 skills and my need for a good value (in the truest sense of the term).
Graham and his staff were patient, attentive and extremely helpful in helping us find the perfect piano for our needs. When a piano that played beautifully but needed refinishing came in, Graham contacted us, asked what finish to the case we would like and delivered our perfect piano to our requirements.

We later found a small problem in the finish of the panelling (which no-one was sure how it happened and out of warranty!), fortunately Graham and his team took the problem parts, and re-finished them to a fantastic standard, no fuss and no problems.

This week has been very busy on the restoration front.We have completed the re polishing of the Bechstein model IV piano & started on the Hopkinson piano.
The Bechstein is an Ebony finish with 3 detailed marquetry panel depicting flowers that insert into the front panel.

Completely different is the hopkinson piano finished in a stunning Rosewood case in semi gloss finish,with satinwood banding & the name inlaid in brass on the lid.
Both piano should be back to-gether next week

How long does it take to restore a piano

It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes to rebuild piano,with almost 12,000 parts to check over the task can be a daunting one to the Amateur.
Here at Bedhampton Pianoshop it is part of our daily work.
It still takes hours of labour to get to the end result,but when you get to the end it is very satisfying to see the works of your labour .a rebuilt piano upright or grand that will last many years to come & be a joy to look at.

It is now about 18 months since our beautiful early 1900's 5'8'' Broadwood grand arrived and its extensive restoration by you and your team, so its time for an update. We enjoy it so much and its beautiful, warm tone plus the rich bass. Our daughter who plays it mostly has learnt such touch and expression in her playing, she may never leave home ….. without it. Gerry has also been excellent in tuning and adjustments as the new strings have settled in. How we are glad we didn't opt for a modern upright, making the player look at the wall even if it might have saved a little £. Hello Graham,
Just wanted to write and thank you for a first rate service. As you know my piano which I have owned from new, since early 1970's, was in a serious state having been left in a farmhouse for sometime and been attacked by mice and moth inside and out.
It was so bad, I was seriously considering taking it to the dump and actually took it outside for a day to do just that. However sentimental reasons held me back as I did not want to part with it.
I cannot beleive that my beloved piano now looks in such excellant condition.
You managed to take care of all the problems and I am now proud to have it back in my home. It is a joy to look at, all woodwork gleaming and all chewed keys etc renewed and of course it now plays well.

The last few weeks have seen a noticeable increase in customers through the door, and September is proving to be a very busy month. Since the last blog, we have sold both our John Broadwood uprights, the attractive Paul Werner upright and our Steinway grand. With a deposit also placed on our 1930's Hopkinson upright, we are working flat out to prepare pianos both for customers and for our shop.

On the restoration front, the 1897 Bechstein upright (pictured) has reached the end of the long rebuilding process and is now ready to be viewed and played. All the remains to be done are a couple more tunings as the new strings settle in. The hard work is proving worthwhile, as this is comfortably the nicest Bechstein upright that we have sold to date. Also on display in the shop is our one remaining Grotrian Steinweg (below). This too has had a comprehensive restoration, and the previously black casework looks superb in it's natural satin finish.

There are plenty more pianos in the pipeline, including uprights from Chappell, Challen, Rogers, John Brinsmead and Zender. For those customers seeking the highest quality pianos, we also have a second Bechstein, a Bluthner and a Kaps upright all currently awaiting some degree of restoration. All of these pianos are in various states of repair, so please call before visiting to avoid a wasted trip.

The last couple of weeks have been buoyant,& we have seen a steady flow of customers through our doors.With some positive sales to boot.
Next week I am mixing business with pleasure taking a few days away with the family & attending a piano auction as well.

Third Steinweg Available Soon

Only a week since the last progress report, but our third Grotrian Steinweg upright is well on the way to being completed. Repolishing of the case should be completed within the next few days, and all other aspects of the internal reconditioning are finished, ready for re-assembly and regulation of the piano.

Work also commenced on the second ebony Bechstein upright. The casework has already been prepared for polishing, and restoration of the action and other parts is under way.

Both of these pianos should be available to view and play soon.

Finally, we will shortly begin some preliminary stages of restoration on the Steinway grand. This piano is available with three different pricing options, so that restoration can be tailored to your requirements and budget. Call or pay us a visit to discuss these options in detail. Plenty of restoration going on over the last few weeks.

Two new pianos are now completed and ready to view and play. One of our Ebony Bechsteins has just been regulated, which completes the required reconditioning. As mentioned last week, the casework has been repolished in the original black finish, and the worn out ivories have been replaced with a new set of white key tops.

Also available to see in the shop is the second of our three Grotrian Steinwegs (see photo). This piano dates from around 1926 and is an excellent example. A throrough reconditioning has ensured that this piano is outstanding both to play and hear. Well the last few weeks have been very busy with restoration.

We have sent off the Rich Lipp(photo) piano hammers to be recovered in Germany,Also to have a set Of grotrian upright hammers made for us.The model 9 Bechstein is near completion,we have decided that restoration of the old ivories is impossible,so a new set of off white key tops are being put on as we speak.Case work repolishing now completed as is most of the action work.we hope to have the bechstein completed by the end of next week.

Steinweg, Lanstein and more!

Restringing on the 1905 Grotrian Steinweg is now completed, and the piano is back together and fully regulated. It is now in the shop and available to view and play, although further tuning is required before it will sound at its best, as the new strings are still stretching and bedding in.

Also now in the shop and ready to be played is the Lanstein Baby Grand. This piano has a surprising tone and touch for its size, and at only £1995 is fantastic value for a grand piano.

Work has commenced on both the Hopkinson upright and one of the ebony Bechstein uprights. The Hopkinson hammers have already been removed from the action and are currently in Germany being re-covered with new felt. Having been cleaned up, the ivory keys are in superb condition, and the casework should also look as good as new once repolished. This piano should be available to play soon after Chrismas.

We also have a small modern Rogers upright arriving in stock soon. Details will be available on the website.

Grotrian Steinweg upright

A brief rundown of what's been happening in the shop this week.

Work has continued on the 1905 Grotrian Steinweg. As planned, restringing has begun (see photo). This should hopefully be completed within the next week. and shortly afterwards the piano should be ready to play once again.

Also this week, we have undertaken the majority of the necessary work on the Knight K15 which has already been reserved by a customer. This included a thorough clean of the casework, brasses and keys, all of which was badly needed! The result is a piano which has been completely transformed cosmetically. The piano has also had most of the regulation carried out, so with a few more hours work it will be ready to be seen and played by the customer.

Today we have also taken delivery of 3 more pianos; an ebony Bechstein model 9 upright from 1905, a lovely Hopkinson 1930s upright, and a baby grand by Lanstein (thought to be made by monnington & weston). All 3 will require varying degrees of restoration and re-conditioning, but as always contact us for more details on estimated prices and more details.

STEINWAY GRAND

We have had a lot of interest in the Steinway grand piano,so we are now deciding weather to let this piano go un-restored or to completely rebuild it

Well we have had another busy month with restorations .At the moment we are rebuilding a Grotrian Steinweg made in 1905,& we are nearing the point of restringing (see photo)
On the selling front we have seen Grands being sold as well as uprights.I have been busy on the buying side with the acquisition of a Bechstein model 9 upright along with a Grotrian Steinweg 125 model in ebony.I have also acquired an English overstrung piano 1930s hopkinson in mahogany.We have Finally completed work on the WELMAR baby grand and almost finished work on the German Geissler grand piano.
November looks to be a very busy month for us with lots of restoration in the pipeline.

Well September has been a bumper month for piano sales & restoration of both upright and grand pianos.

Progress Update - Week Commencing 15th September

The weekly updates have now become 'progress updates' as it was proving difficult to post a new update every week!

Since the last update, the new pianos mentioned have all arrived at the shop. The Steinway & Sons grand is currently in the shop and playable, although it will only fulfil its potential once considerable restoration has been carried out. The ebony Bechstein upright is also in the shop, although this piano is is need of a greater amount of work before it will begin to play and sound like a Bechstein should.

The 1920s Grotrian Steinweg (pictured) mentioned in the last update is already in the workshop, along with another Steinweg dating from 1905. These pianos will receive a total overhaul and should be superb pianos once completed. Finally, one Chappell upright reserved by a customer has been completed and is awaiting delivery, and another Chappell has arrived in stock to take its place. This piano was restored by us a few years ago, and since arriving back at the shop has already had some small tweaks and adjustments to get it performing at its best again.

In the workshop, work has begun on the two Steinweg uprights as mentioned above, and our Bechstein grand was also put on its feet for the first time after substantial repairs to one of the legs. This piano certainly has a lot of potential, but having come from a school is in need of serious attention.

Hi Graham ,
I thought I would send a quick message to let you know that my French Cafe Barrel Piano upon which you recently carried out complete re-stringing and other restoration work, is now back to its former glory having had some futher restoration to some of its mechanical parts. It now sounds and performs much the way that it would have done when it was first entertained patrons in Nice, around 1910. That is of course in no small way a credit to yourself and your team of experts in the workshops at Bedhampton. When I first contacted you about the project, I was of course a little cautious as this was the first time you has been asked to work on a barrel piano and although the instrument shares many similarities with the construction of normal pianos, there are certainly many features of it that DO NOT !! However my mind was soon put to rest, not least by your friendly and honest approach to customer relations, understanding exactly what the customer wants, and of course advising accordingly when necessary. I must say that I am certainly impressed by the neatness and quality of the workmanship, and the attention to detail when required.

I will definitely be contacting you again in the future to discuss the restoration of other instruments and will have no hesitation in recommending you to others.

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 25th August

This week's update sees the completion of both the Broadwood grand restoration and the repolishing of the water damaged Lambert upright.

The owners of the Lambert have already been to view the piano, and were unable to recognise it in the shop, such is the transformation! In fact, two members of the family have since returned a second time to have another look! The Broadwood grand had some finishing touches this morning, and the customers will be visiting the shop later today for a final viewing. If they are satisfied with the end result, both pianos will be ready for delivery, and this will also allow us the capacity to begin repolishing the Chappell upright which has already been reserved by another customer.

With at least three pianos leaving the shop soon, we have been able to purchase new stock to replace them. So far, we have three pianos which are all expected to arrive on Tuesday 9th September. They are a Grotrian Steinweg upright dating from around 1926, a Bechstein upright from about 1898 finished in black, and a Steinway and Sons grand in Rosewood (pictured at the auction house). All three are from highly regarded makers. More information and photos will be available once the pianos arrive at our workshop.

The summer sale has now officially ended. However, it may be a few days before the prices are updated back to their full amounts, so this really is the very last chance to get a bit of a discount!

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 18th August

A few weeks since the last update, as the shop was closed for a week. We are now open once again and restoration work is back up to speed!

The Broadwood grand is now fully operational! The stringing was completed, and we have had the piano tuned a couple of times already. The action has been regulated to produce the best possible touch and response, and the customers spent a couple of hours looking over and playing the piano. The completed internal restoration is shown in the photo, and there are more step-by-step pictures available via our website. The next stage is to repolish the casework to the customers' requirements, and preparation for this is already underway.

The water damaged piano belonging to another client is progressing towards completion as well. The various removable panels and parts are finished, and the relevant brasses and mouldings have been refitted. Once the main case has been repolished, the whole piano can be put back together, and will be ready for viewing by the client. The piano is barely recognisable from the heavily damaged one that arrived here a few weeks ago, and the natural finish allows the beautiful rosewood grain to be fully appreciated, unlike the much darker colour of the piano prior to restoration.

Other work carried out in the last few weeks includes the first stages of preparing the reserved Chappell upright for repolishing, tuning of the barrel piano before it was delivered back to its owner, and regulation work on one of our own small John Broadwood uprights.

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 27th July

Our ongoing projects are all progressing well, with some of the long term work now finished or nearing completion.

Restringing of the barrel piano is now completely finished, and the 'action' has been returned to the piano. This allowed adjustment of the strings and the action to ensure that the hammers would cleanly strike their correct strings. The strings can then be bought up to the correct tension and tuned for the first time. This will be an interesting job in itself, as the piano cannot be played in the usual way, so each string must be plucked instead!

The Broadwood grand is also approaching the point where it will once again be playable. The repaired soundboard has been repolished, and the frame has been returned to the piano. New felt parts were made based on the old worn ones, and hitchpin washers were added. The piano is already partially restrung, with all of the steel 'treble' strings in place. The copper wound bass strings should be completed within a couple of days. The dampers have already been replaced for those notes that have the new strings, and they have been regulated to lift off the strings in unison when the sustain pedal is pressed.

There is still plenty of restoration work lined up. The client's water-damaged piano is now prepared for polishing, and we have also carried out some reconditioning of the action. One of our own Chappell pianos has also been reserved by a customer who wishes to have the case repolished, and there has also been interest shown in the Bluthner grand.
