Welcome to the Bedhampton Pianoshop Blog!

We have been restoring and selling pianos since 1988. We specialise in restoring and reconditioning old pianos, both upright and grand. Our work ranges from minor servicing right through to complete overhauls and rebuilding projects which take many weeks to complete.

The aim of the blog is to post regular progress reports on ongoing restoration work, as well as updates on the current available stock and any new arrivals. Where possible these updates will be accompanied by photos to demonstrate the work that we do.

Steinweg, Lanstein and more!

Restringing on the 1905 Grotrian Steinweg is now completed, and the piano is back together and fully regulated. It is now in the shop and available to view and play, although further tuning is required before it will sound at its best, as the new strings are still stretching and bedding in.

Also now in the shop and ready to be played is the Lanstein Baby Grand. This piano has a surprising tone and touch for its size, and at only £1995 is fantastic value for a grand piano.

Work has commenced on both the Hopkinson upright and one of the ebony Bechstein uprights. The Hopkinson hammers have already been removed from the action and are currently in Germany being re-covered with new felt. Having been cleaned up, the ivory keys are in superb condition, and the casework should also look as good as new once repolished. This piano should be available to play soon after Chrismas.

We also have a small modern Rogers upright arriving in stock soon. Details will be available on the website.

Grotrian Steinweg upright

A brief rundown of what's been happening in the shop this week.
Work has continued on the 1905 Grotrian Steinweg. As planned, restringing has begun (see photo). This should hopefully be completed within the next week. and shortly afterwards the piano should be ready to play once again.

Also this week, we have undertaken the majority of the necessary work on the Knight K15 which has already been reserved by a customer. This included a thorough clean of the casework, brasses and keys, all of which was badly needed! The result is a piano which has been completely transformed cosmetically. The piano has also had most of the regulation carried out, so with a few more hours work it will be ready to be seen and played by the customer.

Today we have also taken delivery of 3 more pianos; an ebony Bechstein model 9 upright from 1905, a lovely Hopkinson 1930s upright, and a baby grand by Lanstein (thought to be made by monnington & weston). All 3 will require varying degrees of restoration and re-conditioning, but as always contact us for more details on estimated prices and more details.

Progress Update - Week Commencing 15th September

The weekly updates have now become 'progress updates' as it was proving difficult to post a new update every week!

Since the last update, the new pianos mentioned have all arrived at the shop. The Steinway & Sons grand is currently in the shop and playable, although it will only fulfil its potential once considerable restoration has been carried out. The ebony Bechstein upright is also in the shop, although this piano is is need of a greater amount of work before it will begin to play and sound like a Bechstein should.

The 1920s Grotrian Steinweg (pictured) mentioned in the last update is already in the workshop, along with another Steinweg dating from 1905. These pianos will receive a total overhaul and should be superb pianos once completed. Finally, one Chappell upright reserved by a customer has been completed and is awaiting delivery, and another Chappell has arrived in stock to take its place. This piano was restored by us a few years ago, and since arriving back at the shop has already had some small tweaks and adjustments to get it performing at its best again.
In the workshop, work has begun on the two Steinweg uprights as mentioned above, and our Bechstein grand was also put on its feet for the first time after substantial repairs to one of the legs. This piano certainly has a lot of potential, but having come from a school is in need of serious attention.
Get in touch to find out more about any of these pianos, as more information will become available as and when we have a chance to assess them all!

Visit our website at http://www.bedhamptonpianoshop.co.uk/ to see details of the restoration work that we do, and to view all of our current stock.

Paul Baker - Gosport

Hi Graham ,
I thought I would send a quick message to let you know that my French Cafe Barrel Piano upon which you recently carried out complete re-stringing and other restoration work, is now back to its former glory having had some futher restoration to some of its mechanical parts. It now sounds and performs much the way that it would have done when it was first entertained patrons in Nice, around 1910. That is of course in no small way a credit to yourself and your team of experts in the workshops at Bedhampton. When I first contacted you about the project, I was of course a little cautious as this was the first time you has been asked to work on a barrel piano and although the instrument shares many similarities with the construction of normal pianos, there are certainly many features of it that DO NOT !! However my mind was soon put to rest, not least by your friendly and honest approach to customer relations, understanding exactly what the customer wants, and of course advising accordingly when necessary. I must say that I am certainly impressed by the neatness and quality of the workmanship, and the attention to detail when required.

I will definitely be contacting you again in the future to discuss the restoration of other instruments and will have no hesitation in recommending you to others.

Sunday 7 September 2008

Dr Rachael Ross - Portchester

The piano arrived back safely after its restoration and looks super and plays beautifully. I have been very happy with your advice previously concerning getting it tuned, and I was fortunate in that you showroom and workshop are along my route to work, so I was able to drop in and quiz you about getting the instrument restored after what appears to have been a hard life since 1924-ish. I'm looking forward to showing it to the friend who let me have it a year or so ago. I don't think she'll believe it is the same one! Thank you for all the detailed work.

Saturday 30 August 2008

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 25th August

This week's update sees the completion of both the Broadwood grand restoration and the repolishing of the water damaged Lambert upright.

The owners of the Lambert have already been to view the piano, and were unable to recognise it in the shop, such is the transformation! In fact, two members of the family have since returned a second time to have another look! The Broadwood grand had some finishing touches this morning, and the customers will be visiting the shop later today for a final viewing. If they are satisfied with the end result, both pianos will be ready for delivery, and this will also allow us the capacity to begin repolishing the Chappell upright which has already been reserved by another customer.

With at least three pianos leaving the shop soon, we have been able to purchase new stock to replace them. So far, we have three pianos which are all expected to arrive on Tuesday 9th September. They are a Grotrian Steinweg upright dating from around 1926, a Bechstein upright from about 1898 finished in black, and a Steinway and Sons grand in Rosewood (pictured at the auction house). All three are from highly regarded makers. More information and photos will be available once the pianos arrive at our workshop.

The summer sale has now officially ended. However, it may be a few days before the prices are updated back to their full amounts, so this really is the very last chance to get a bit of a discount!

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 18th August

A few weeks since the last update, as the shop was closed for a week. We are now open once again and restoration work is back up to speed!

The Broadwood grand is now fully operational! The stringing was completed, and we have had the piano tuned a couple of times already. The action has been regulated to produce the best possible touch and response, and the customers spent a couple of hours looking over and playing the piano. The completed internal restoration is shown in the photo, and there are more step-by-step pictures available via our website. The next stage is to repolish the casework to the customers' requirements, and preparation for this is already underway.

The water damaged piano belonging to another client is progressing towards completion as well. The various removable panels and parts are finished, and the relevant brasses and mouldings have been refitted. Once the main case has been repolished, the whole piano can be put back together, and will be ready for viewing by the client. The piano is barely recognisable from the heavily damaged one that arrived here a few weeks ago, and the natural finish allows the beautiful rosewood grain to be fully appreciated, unlike the much darker colour of the piano prior to restoration.

Other work carried out in the last few weeks includes the first stages of preparing the reserved Chappell upright for repolishing, tuning of the barrel piano before it was delivered back to its owner, and regulation work on one of our own small John Broadwood uprights.

As a final note, the summer sale is drawing to a close. It must end before the beginning of September, so there are less than two weeks left to enjoy a discount on any piano in our stock!

Thursday 31 July 2008

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 27th July

Our ongoing projects are all progressing well, with some of the long term work now finished or nearing completion.

Restringing of the barrel piano is now completely finished, and the 'action' has been returned to the piano. This allowed adjustment of the strings and the action to ensure that the hammers would cleanly strike their correct strings. The strings can then be bought up to the correct tension and tuned for the first time. This will be an interesting job in itself, as the piano cannot be played in the usual way, so each string must be plucked instead!

The Broadwood grand is also approaching the point where it will once again be playable. The repaired soundboard has been repolished, and the frame has been returned to the piano. New felt parts were made based on the old worn ones, and hitchpin washers were added. The piano is already partially restrung, with all of the steel 'treble' strings in place. The copper wound bass strings should be completed within a couple of days. The dampers have already been replaced for those notes that have the new strings, and they have been regulated to lift off the strings in unison when the sustain pedal is pressed.

There is still plenty of restoration work lined up. The client's water-damaged piano is now prepared for polishing, and we have also carried out some reconditioning of the action. One of our own Chappell pianos has also been reserved by a customer who wishes to have the case repolished, and there has also been interest shown in the Bluthner grand.

Monday 21 July 2008

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 14th July

A few different jobs to update this week.

The Broadwood grand soundboard has been repaired, and all the preparation work has been carried out ready to repolish. The bridges have also been cleaned up and sanded, before applying liquid graphite to the tops, to ensure that the strings slide easily across the bridge as they are tensioned.

The Hopkinson piano is completed and ready to be delivered back to the customer. The repolishing was carried out, with the piano being finished in a deep mahogany colour. The piano was re-assembled, with new felts and brass screws where necessary, and finally the regulation of the action took place. A few finishing touches and a final check over complete the job.

One new project for this week - restoring the case on a water-damaged piano, as part of a joint project with a local antiques/furniture dealer. Although the piano itself is of the straight strung and overdamped variety, stripping of the old polish revealed a beautiful rosewood which will be highly attractive when repolished. The brasswork has been polished, and the keys will be cleaned up.

Saturday 12 July 2008

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 7th July

Plenty of restoration work done on several pianos this week.

The Broadwood grand is progressing well. Following on from the last update, the new rollers have been fitted (see photo), and the hammers have all been refaced to remove indents. The keybed was regulated to adjust the level of the keys, and the amount of travel or 'dip'. The whole action is now reassembled and ready to be returned to the piano, whereupon further stages of regulation can take place. The iron frame has also been resprayed (pictured), and the retaining bolts polished. Repairs to the soundboard splits are underway, with the wooden shims fixed in place. They now require sanding, before the whole soundboard is cleaned up and repolished, ready for the frame to be replaced. Hopefully the piano will be ready for restringing in the near future, after which the remaining regulation work can be carried out, and the piano will be playable!

A new project this week is the internal and external restoration of a Hopkinson upright piano for a client. The action has had a series of standard reconditioning jobs completed, including new return tapes, refacing of hammers and application of liquid graphite to high friction areas, as well as a thorough check for any other necessary repairs. Both front rail and centre rail key bushings have been replaced, and the keys have been cleaned and buffed. Brasses have been polished, and the casework is stripped and prepared for repolishing. Hopkinson pianos are generally very nice instruments, and the end result of all this work should be satisfying.

Finally, as anticipated in the previous update, the barrel piano has had the majority of the treble stringing completed. The bass strings are due to arrive in a few days time, and the job should be finished soon after.

Having bought a bargain upright Bechstein unseen and unplayed from ebay, I entrusted the task of restoring it to its former glory to Graham and his team. The transformation has been staggering. What was a musty, rattling and tired old instrument now looks and plays as though delivered new from the showroom. All this was achieved for a fraction of the price of the quotes I received from other restorers. I couldn't be happier!

Thursday 3 July 2008

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 30th June

More progress is being made on our main projects.

Having stripped the old polish from the John Broadwood grand's soundboard, the wood has now been bleached to remove discolouration and marks. Once the splits have been repaired, the soundboard can be repolished to leave it looking almost like new. Also in the past week, work has begun to restore the action so that this will be ready to put back into the restored casework. So far, the front rail key bushings have been replaced, and all of the hammers have been removed from the action to have the old and worn rollers replaced with brand new ones. The old rollers were removed from the hammers, as shown in the picture, and the new ones are ready to be fitted. This should be completed within a day or two. Finally, a sample of the old bass strings and the relevant measurements have been sent to our string maker, who will prepare a set of copper wound strings designed precisely to fit this piano. To ensure the best tone possible, this is a crucial and specialised job.

The same process is also underway for the bass strings on the barrel piano which we are restringing. In the meantime, the necessary preparation for the restringing has taken place, and the main work will start tomorrow, when the treble strings will begin to be replaced.

As ever, visit our website at http://www.bedhamptonpianoshop.co.uk/ to see details of the restoration work that we do, and to view all of our current stock. Don't forget that the UP TO 20% SALE is still ongoing!!

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 16th June

Plenty has been going on over the past week. The Creber baby grand piano is completed. The client has been to view the piano and was delighted with the results, saying that it 'looked like a new piano'.

The completion of the Creber has allowed us space to begin work on a 5'8" John Broadwood grand piano which has already been reserved by a customer. This piano will receive a complete overhaul, including a repolished case, repaired and repolished soundboard, repainted iron frame, new strings and a complete reconditioning of the action. So far, the old strings have been measured and then removed, and the iron frame has been removed from the piano, allowing full access to the soundboard. The old polish has also been stripped from the casework and the soundboard.

The pictures show the strings in the process of being measured and removed, and the piano case with the iron frame having been lifted out. The next job will be to repair small splits in the soundboard using wooden shims.
Other jobs undertaken this week were measuring and removal of the strings on the barrel piano ready for the restringing. Work continued on the Chappel upright, which is now almost ready to be put on sale. Action repairs were finished, and the piano was regulated - a time consuming job on an action that had required so much work, but essential for a piano that plays and responds as it should.

Finally, we have a 5 foot Bluthner grand with a beautiful figured mahogany case arriving at the shop tomorrow. Once again this piano will receive a total restoration, and the end result should be fantastic, as these pianos are some of the best small grands ever made.

Lizzie T - London

We are so enjoying having the piano. The girls play a lot. It looks so well in its place too – you did a beautiful job on the restoration. This is a good opportunity to say how much we have appreciated dealing with you and your team. From the early guidance you gave us, to the visits to the shop to explore our options, to the feedback and involvement we had as you rebuilt “our” piano, you have been a pleasure to deal with. I had complete confidence in your recommendations and your work; it has been fun to see the email updates and photos - it’s rare these days that any purchase has quite so much of the heart and soul that you and your team have put into this piano. You all clearly take such care, and value the instruments you work with; the whole experience has been reassuring and very enjoyable. Thank you all for a really excellent service.

Saturday 14 June 2008

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 9th June

More progress on the jobs that were started last week.

The client's Creber baby grand is now entering the final stages of the repolish. All of the smaller panels and parts are completed, and the brasswork has been refitted as fas as possible. The main case of the piano is underway, and should be completed within the next few days. The complete piano can then be re-assembled ready for the client to view.

The action of the 1911 Chappell upright is still in the workshop. Further stages of reconditioning have been completed, but repairs and restoration are still necessary before the piano will be playable.

Finally, an interesting and unusual project. We have received a 'barrel'
piano (pictured) from a client for a complete restring. These instruments do not require a pianist to play. Instead, a large barrel with strategically positioned notches turns slowly in the piano, and the notches trigger the correct notes on the piano resulting in a tune being played. The piano is larger than most normal upright pianos, and the restringing job differs because the notes do not follow a standard chromatic pattern.

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 2nd June

A couple of things to report this week.

As advertised on the blog and our website, we currently have a summer sale running with 10% off all pianos and piano stools, making this a great time to get a good deal or to make your budget stretch that bit further! Take a look at the website, give us a call, or visit in person to find out more.

Restoration wise, we have begun work on another repolishing job for a client - a 'Creber' baby grand. The piano arrived last weekend and work is progressing well, with all parts of the piano already stripped, sanded and prepared for polishing. Work will continue next week to start building up the coats of sealer, stain and the final finishing coat. The brasswork has already been cleaned and polished ready for re-assembly of the piano.

Also this week, a Chappell upright piano arrived in the workshop. This piano dates from 1911, and is in need of some considerable repair and restoration work to the action. Already, the old return tapes and balance head leathers have been removed, and new ones measured and cut to size. Other repair work, inlcluding re-centering of many flanges is also ongoing. This piano will be available to see and play soon!

In addition, a couple of pianos in the shop received a fine regulation - the final job before a piano is completely ready to be delivered to a customer.

Hi Graham,
The piano is lovely; we’re both delighted with it. I’d like to get hold of a stool that does it justice, so if anything comes in, please do let me know. From start to finish your customer service has been second to none, and with regards to the delivery; I think it was the most efficient and courteous I’ve ever been on the receiving end of.
Thanks very much!

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 19th May

Attention was focused this week on completion of our client's Challen Baby Grand. The remainder of the repolishing was carried out, and the piano has now been re-assembled in our workshop, as seen in the photo. This piano was unusual for us, because the client had requested a very dark colour for the new finish on their piano. The results are certainly pleasing though, and the whole piano has been bought back to life.

The piano was then ready for regulation - the fine adjustment of the action to ensure that the touch of the piano is uniform and responsive from the first note to the last. The piano is receiving a tuning as I type, and although further tunings will be necessary following the re-stringing of the piano, the restoration is now all but complete.

Other work this week included further restoration to our John Broadwood upright. The keys were cleaned and buffed, and along with the action they are now ready to be returned to the piano. The substantial jobs left to do are the polishing of the case and regulation of the action. The small Zender piano has now received a tuning, and one of our other small John Broadwood uprights is now available to view and play in the shop.

Weekly Update - Week Commencing 12th May

Two pianos have been the focus of our restoration work this week.

An ongoing restoration of a Challen Baby Grand piano for a client is now nearing completion. This week the bulk of the casework polishing has taken place, and the piano is almost ready to be re-assembled. Various repolished parts can be seen in the photo. The piano should be up on its feet and ready for tuning and regulation early next week. The dampers, complete with new felts, have also been returned to the piano and adjusted correctly.

One of the John Broadwood upright pianos from our own stock has also received a considerable amount of attention. The casework has been stripped and prepared for re-polishing. The action required repairs to a great number of parts, in addition to all of the usual work necessary to renovate an action of this age. The brasswork has been cleaned and polished, and a set of key bushings have been renewed. Restoration to the action is progressing well, and repolishing of the case can commence once the Challen grand has been completed.

Also this week, a 1991 Zender modern piano has arrived in stock. The piano has already been cleaned up externally, and is just awaiting a fine adjustment of the regulation. Zender pianos are the smallest 7 octave pianos available, and offer an excellent tone and touch for their size.

Ian and Stephanie Morris - Buckinghamshire

Dear Graham,

Having watched, stage by stage, the total restoration of the Gors and Kallmann Grand bought from you recently and now seeing the piano installed in its right and proper place in our home, we just want to say what a pleasure the whole experience has been. The collection of pictures and communication from you as the work progressed added to the confidence that the final product would not disappoint – nor did it. Although originally built in we believe 1913 it looks and plays as though fresh from the factory, indeed probably better, and if as you say it will improve as it settles to its new home and few more tunings, then we certainly have a piano of which to be proud. May we express our thanks to you and your team for the expertise, craftsmanship and obvious care taken in the restoration.

TG, Consultant - Southampton

Our Ibach piano was made around 1880 and was bought for my grandmother in Manchester. My mother also learned to play on it as did my sisters and I. My mother always said what a good piano it was, but by my time it was sounding rather tired and we could not really hear what was special about it. More recently it became unusable as it could not hold tuning for very long and a couple of keys stopped working. After a full and comprehensive refurbishment by Graham and his team it is sounding as it must have done in its early years: especially, the lower octaves have a superb rich tone and the actions of the keys and pedals feel really good. It feels like a piece of family history has come to life. Well done!

Mrs Pemberton - West Sussex

We searched high and low for our perfect Bechstein piano, in London and elsewhere. It was easy to find those with good-looking cases, but hard to find one with a good tone. I commend Bedhampton Pianos to anyone looking for an old piano which has been superbly reconditioned.
